Big matches, big moments, big innovation.
DStv customers who are sports enthusiasts can now look forward to a packed weekend of thrilling games, as live international sports continues its welcome return this week with the resumption of PGA Golf, UFC, Spain’s LA Liga and the new-look New Zealand Aotearoa Super Rugby tournament.
Live football will make its long-awaited come back to DStv with an exciting two-game line-up on SuperSport this weekend. Espanyol will be taking on Alaves on Saturday (available on DStv channels 201, 204, 207, 221 at 14:00); and Athletic Bilbao will be playing Atletico Madrid on Sunday (available on DStv 201, 2017, 204, 221 at 14:00).
However, these broadcasts may not be as fans remember them before the COVID-19 hiatus. Innovations have been implemented in two main areas: virtualisation of stands and fan audio as well as new camera positions and the images they will offer to viewers. The stands will offer to-scale images of seated fans wearing the colours of the home club. For moments when the game is stopped, this image of fans can be transformed into a canvas that matches the colour of the home team and will carry inspirational messages, among other offerings.
Aotearoa Super Rugby
New Zealand’s newly created Aotearoa rugby event involving the Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes, Crusaders and Highlanders. This begins on June 13 and will see two matches being played on the weekend – one on each of Saturday and Sunday.
In the opening round of fixtures, the Highlanders will host the Chiefs at Forsyth Barr Stadium on June 13th, before the Blues take on the Hurricanes in Auckland on Sunday. The Crusaders have a bye week for the opening round of the tournament and SuperSport will broadcast all matches live.
In a pioneering move, athletics will host the Impossible Games on two continents on Thursday when Team Cheruiyot races the Norwegian Team Ingebrigsten (Henrik, Filip, and Jakob) as part of the Impossible Games in a novel 2000m race. Catch the action on DStv channels: 200, 201, 208, 210, 221 at 20:00.
Cheruiyot will be joined by his predecessor as world champion, Elijah Manongoi, as the two teams compete to see which team can clock the best overall 2000m time from its top three runners. While the race is being held as a team event, individual performances will also count, with the three Ingebrigtsen brothers aiming to break Steve Cram’s European record of four minutes 51.39 seconds.
Golf lovers will be happy to see the Charles Schwab Classic back, live from the US starting on Thursday, June 11. The challenge will boast similar innovations to La Liga in the absence of live crowds. Several golfers are expected to be mic’d, which will add a fascinating dimension to television broadcasts. The game will be available on DStv channels: 200, 201, 205 from 22:00.
Ultimate Fighting Championship
Headlined by Jessica Eye and Cynthia Calvillo, the ever-popular UFC returns this weekend with UFC Fight Night in a flyweight showdown in Las Vegas. The action will be available on DStv channel: 201 from 16:00 on Sunday.
